Brenda Blethyn Confirms Return to 'Excellent' Iconic Drama Series
Brenda Blethyn Returns to Iconic Drama Series

Brenda Blethyn is set to return as Emma Harte in the second series of Channel 4's adaptation of A Woman of Substance, following the show's record-breaking success. The eight-part series will continue the story of the ambitious Yorkshire maid who builds a global business empire, based on Barbara Taylor Bradford's 1979 bestselling novel.

Blethyn Reprises Iconic Role

Blethyn, now 80, became synonymous with DCI Vera Stanhope in ITV's Vera for over a decade before stepping away last year. She quickly returned to screens in Channel 4's A Woman of Substance, and now the former Vera star will play the older Emma Harte once again. Jessica Reynolds reprises her role as the young Emma, as the character navigates the 1920s and battles to reclaim her life's work from Jim Fairley in the 1970s.

Record-Breaking Viewership

The 2026 adaptation became Channel 4's most streamed show since Russell T Davies' It's A Sin, drawing an average audience of three million per episode. However, this is dwarfed by the original 1984 adaptation, which attracted 14 million viewers and remains unbeaten in 42 years. That series starred Jenny Seagrove as Emma Harte.

Return of an 'Irresistible' Drama

Channel 4 interim drama boss Gwawr Lloyd said: "Following the incredible success and popularity of the brilliant first series, we're thrilled to be bringing the incomparable and iconic Emma Harte back to Channel 4 again. Series two will continue Emma's story with all the ambition, drama and family intrigue that made A Woman of Substance such a compelling and irresistible watch."

The second series will follow Emma beyond World War I into the roaring 1920s, with Deadline teasing: "Her ambition for the Harte name is unrelenting, as is her determination to make the Fairley family pay." A Woman of Substance is available to stream on Channel 4.
