Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish is reportedly in advanced discussions to make her feature film debut in an upcoming cinematic adaptation of Sylvia Plath's seminal novel The Bell Jar. The project will be written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sarah Polley, who earned an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for her 2022 film Women Talking.

The adaptation is set to be produced by Joy Gorman Wettels alongside Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal, with Focus Features handling distribution. This marks a significant step for Eilish's acting career following her television debut in the 2023 satirical miniseries Swarm, where she portrayed Eva, a charismatic women's empowerment cult leader. Her performance in that series earned her the People's Choice Award for TV Performance of the Year.

The Bell Jar, first published in 1963, remains the only novel by American poet Sylvia Plath. The story follows Esther Greenwood, a brilliant college student who secures a coveted internship at a New York fashion magazine but gradually spirals into depression as she grapples with identity, societal expectations for women, and her personal ambitions. Widely regarded as semi-autobiographical, the novel draws heavily from Plath's own experiences with mental illness. Tragically, Plath died by suicide just one month after the book's initial UK publication.
Previous Attempts to Adapt The Bell Jar for Screen
Previous efforts to bring The Bell Jar to the screen have met with limited success. A 1979 film adaptation directed by Larry Peerce and starring Marilyn Hassett as Esther Greenwood received minimal critical attention. In 2016, another adaptation was announced with Kirsten Dunst set to make her feature directorial debut and Dakota Fanning slated to star, but the project was ultimately shelved. Dunst later revealed in a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly that she never secured the rights to the material.
