BBC Commits to The Traitors Franchise Until 2030 With Major New Agreement
The BBC has solidified the future of its hit reality series The Traitors by signing a significant new three-year deal that guarantees the show will remain on screens until at least 2030. This agreement ensures that both the original civilian version and the popular Celebrity Traitors spin-off will continue to be produced and broadcast on the public service broadcaster.
Ratings Success and Annual Installments Promised
Since its debut in 2022, The Traitors has proven to be a substantial ratings triumph for the BBC, with its most recent series attracting a peak audience of 9.6 million viewers. Under the terms of the newly announced deal, audiences can look forward to fresh annual installments of the programme, available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Kalpna Patel-Knight, head of entertainment commissioning at the BBC, expressed enthusiasm about the continuation, stating: "We are proud to remain faithful to The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors until 2030 and wanted to say a big thank you to the outstanding team at Studio Lambert Scotland for bringing it to screen. We can’t wait to share many more twists and turns with viewers all across the UK in the coming years."
Global Phenomenon and Celebrity Spin-Off Triumph
Stephen Lambert, chief executive of Studio Lambert, highlighted the show's international appeal, remarking: "The Traitors has become a genuine television phenomenon across the world, but especially in the UK, and we’re thrilled to continue the journey with the BBC. It’s hugely exciting that audiences will have many more years of strategy, suspense and shocking twists still to come."
The success of the civilian version led to the launch of Celebrity Traitors last autumn, which featured a star-studded cast including Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross, and Paloma Faith. This celebrity edition achieved remarkable viewership, bringing in an average audience of 14.9 million people during its run, making it the biggest TV audience of 2025. The nail-biting finale peaked at 15.4 million viewers, with comedian Alan Carr emerging victorious over faithful historian David Olusoga and actor Nick Mohammed.
Show Format and Future Adaptations
Set in the Scottish Highlands and hosted by Claudia Winkleman, The Traitors follows a group of 22 contestants, predominantly known as faithfuls, as they attempt to identify the murderous traitors among them. These traitors eliminate players overnight in a strategic bid to win a cash prize.
The UK adaptation originated from the Dutch version De Verraders, created in 2021, and has since seen global success with adaptations in numerous countries including Ireland, Australia, France, Canada, and the United States. Additionally, the award-winning franchise is being adapted for a theatrical production scheduled to debut in London in 2027.
Outgoing BBC director-general Tim Davie announced the deal at a Royal Television Society event in London, humorously noting that he would be watching the reality gameshow "as a faithful licence fee payer." This commitment underscores the BBC's dedication to delivering high-quality entertainment that captivates millions of viewers across the nation and beyond.
