Monty Don made his debut as presenter of Have I Got News For You on Friday, April 10, delivering a cheeky jab at rival gardener Alan Titchmarsh. The 70-year-old Gardeners' World star hosted the second episode of the show's 71st series, which has been running for 36 years.
In a preview clip shared on social media, Don discussed the upcoming Chelsea Flower Show with team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton, alongside guest Chris McCausland. When McCausland suggested David Beckham and King Charles would create a garden, Don teased that the expert involved would be "TV's top gardener, national treasure, all round good egg" – prompting Merton to guess Alan Titchmarsh. Don replied, "Yes... the bastard," sparking laughter.
Don's appearance comes weeks after he spoke on BBC Breakfast about the Chelsea Flower Show, which this year lifted its ban on garden gnomes. When asked about the ornaments, Don said, "All power to everybody's elbow, whatever makes you happy. I don't feel snooty about gardening." He also joked about Beckham's potential garden, noting the hard work involved.
