The BBC has successfully negotiated a substantial three-year broadcasting agreement that will keep the immensely popular reality television programmes The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors on air until at least the year 2030. This landmark deal guarantees that audiences across the United Kingdom will receive fresh series of the hit shows every single year, with all episodes being made available for viewing on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer streaming platform.
A Ratings Phenomenon Secured
The Traitors, produced by Studio Lambert Scotland, has been a colossal ratings success for the BBC since its initial launch in 2022. The most recent season achieved a remarkable peak viewing audience of 9.6 million people, solidifying its status as a flagship programme for the broadcaster. The Celebrity Traitors spin-off, which debuted last autumn, proved even more spectacular, drawing an average audience of 14.9 million viewers throughout its run, making it the single most-watched television event of 2025.
Executive Excitement and Future Plans
Kalpna Patel-Knight, the head of entertainment commissioning at the BBC, expressed immense pride in the extended partnership. "We are proud to remain faithful to The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors until 2030 and wanted to say a big thank you to the outstanding team at Studio Lambert Scotland for bringing it to screen," she stated. "We can’t wait to share many more twists and turns with viewers all across the UK in the coming years."
Stephen Lambert, chief executive of Studio Lambert, echoed this enthusiasm, highlighting the show's global impact. "The Traitors has become a genuine television phenomenon across the world, but especially in the UK, and we’re thrilled to continue the journey with the BBC. It’s hugely exciting that audiences will have many more years of strategy, suspense and shocking twists still to come."
Deal Announcement and Show Format
The new agreement was formally announced by outgoing BBC director-general Tim Davie during a Royal Television Society event held in London. Davie remarked that he would personally be watching the reality gameshow "as a faithful licence fee payer." The show, hosted by Claudia Winkleman and filmed in the Scottish Highlands, features 22 contestants. The majority are 'Faithfuls' tasked with identifying the secret 'Traitors' among them, who eliminate players nightly in a bid to win a substantial cash prize.
Celebrity Success and Global Franchise
The Celebrity Traitors featured a renowned cast including Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross, and Paloma Faith. Its nail-biting finale captivated a peak audience of 15.4 million viewers, with comedian Alan Carr ultimately defeating faithful historian David Olusoga and actor Nick Mohammed to claim victory.
Originally adapted from the Dutch programme De Verraders, created in 2021, The Traitors franchise has achieved international success with versions produced in Ireland, Australia, France, Canada, and the United States. In a further expansion of the brand, an award-winning theatrical production based on the show is scheduled to debut in London in 2027.
