BBC Commits to The Traitors Until 2030 with New Three-Year Deal

The BBC has solidified its commitment to the smash-hit reality television franchise The Traitors, securing a new three-year agreement that will keep both the civilian and celebrity versions of the show on BBC1 until at least 2030. This move ensures the broadcaster retains one of its most successful entertainment properties, unlike the fate of The Great British Bake Off, which moved to Channel 4 in 2016.

Record-Breaking Audience Figures and Global Phenomenon

Produced by Studio Lambert Scotland, The Traitors has been a ratings juggernaut for the BBC since its debut in 2022. The latest season achieved a peak audience of nearly 10 million viewers, while the inaugural Celebrity Traitors series in autumn 2025 drew a staggering 15.4 million viewers for its finale, making it the biggest television audience of that year. Comedian Alan Carr emerged victorious in that celebrity edition, outwitting fellow contestants including historian David Olusoga and actor Nick Mohammed.

Kalpna Patel-Knight, head of entertainment commissioning at the BBC, expressed pride in the continued partnership, stating: "We are proud to remain faithful to The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors until 2030 and wanted to say a big thank you to the outstanding team at Studio Lambert Scotland for bringing it to screen. We can't wait to share many more twists and turns with viewers all across the UK in the coming years."

Claudia Winkleman's Dual Success: Hosting and New Ventures

Host Claudia Winkleman, who presides over the tense gameplay set in a Scottish Highlands castle, is capitalising on the show's success by launching her own chat show. The new programme will feature major names from film, television, and music, recorded in front of a studio audience. Winkleman remarked: "I can’t quite believe it and I’m incredibly grateful to the BBC for this opportunity. I'm obviously going to be awful, that goes without saying, but I’m over the moon they’re letting me try."

The format of The Traitors involves 22 contestants, mostly "faithfuls," attempting to identify the secret "traitors" among them. Traitors eliminate players nightly to claim a cash prize, while faithfuls vote to banish suspects at roundtable discussions. The show has spawned international adaptations in countries such as Ireland, Australia, France, Canada, and the United States, originating from a Dutch franchise.

Future Expansions and Industry Endorsements

Stephen Lambert, chief executive of Studio Lambert, highlighted the show's global impact: "The Traitors has become a genuine television phenomenon across the world, but especially in the UK, and we're thrilled to continue the journey with the BBC. It's hugely exciting that audiences will have many more years of strategy, suspense and shocking twists still to come."

Outgoing BBC director-general Tim Davie announced the deal at a Royal Television Society event in London, humorously pledging to watch the show "as a faithful licence fee payer." Additionally, the award-winning series is being adapted into a theatrical production scheduled to debut in London in 2027, further expanding its cultural footprint.

The BBC's agreement guarantees a new series of the main show annually, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of the broadcaster's entertainment lineup. With Claudia Winkleman's new chat show adding to her portfolio, the Traitors franchise continues to evolve, promising more suspense and surprises for audiences nationwide.
