BBC Unveils Special Programming for Sir David Attenborough's Centenary
The BBC has announced a grand celebration for Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday, set to take place on May 8. The broadcaster will honour this "extraordinary milestone" with a week-long special programming event, featuring a mix of new productions and beloved classic shows from the legendary presenter.
Three New Programmes Highlight the Celebration
As part of the festivities, three new shows will premiere. Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic BBC One series first broadcast in 1979. This documentary will include new interviews with Sir David and the original production team, reflecting on the challenges faced during filming, such as a coup in the Comoros, being shot at, and Sir David's memorable encounter with gorillas in Rwanda.
Another new series, Secret Garden, will see Sir David exploring the hidden worlds within Britain's gardens. Over five episodes filmed across the UK, the series aims to capture the rich diversity of life in back gardens while encouraging the public to help save struggling species.
The third programme, David Attenborough's 100 Years on Planet Earth, will be a live event from the Royal Albert Hall, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra and special guests. This event promises to be a highlight of the celebration, blending music and storytelling to honour Sir David's legacy.
Classic Series and iPlayer Collection
In addition to the new shows, the week will feature special episodes from Sir David's most-loved series, including Planet Earth II, Seven Worlds, One Planet, Blue Planet II, Planet Earth III, Frozen Planet II, and his recent film Wild London. A dedicated collection of 40 of Sir David's favourite programmes will also be available on iPlayer, offering viewers a comprehensive look at his remarkable career.
