The BBC endured a humiliating moment during their coverage of the World Cup match between France and Senegal, as fans quickly spotted a glaring mistake in the pre-game graphics. The broadcaster displayed incorrect player images for the French starting lineup, drawing widespread criticism on social media.
Graphic Blunder
Before the match, the BBC's on-screen graphic showed Arsenal defender William Saliba's image labeled as Dayot Upamecano. Additionally, Ibrahima Konate's face was used for Jules Kounde. Fans were quick to call out the error, with many expressing disbelief at the mistake from a major broadcaster.
One user wrote: "Really @BBCMOTD? Your production department doesn't realise that Upamecano is NOT Saliba. Have seen these errors from #BBC before and it's embarrassing for the flagship corporation." Another added: "Oh BBC what are you doing here? Konate isn't Kounde & Saliba isn't a twin of Upamecano. Come on, you're better than that."
A third fan commented: "Omg I literally just saw this and I'm glad you got a screenshot. Upamecano for Saliba and Konate for Kounde?? What is wrong with the BBC??" Others noted that the same photo was used for both Upamecano and Saliba, calling the error "embarrassing."
BBC Apologizes
In response to the backlash, the BBC issued a brief statement: "We apologise for this mistake." The error overshadowed the build-up to the match, which saw France secure a 3-1 victory over Senegal.
Match Highlights
Kylian Mbappe scored a brace for France, while Bradley Barcola also found the net. Senegal's lone goal came from Ibrahim Mbaye, a Paris-born PSG starlet. The win puts France in a strong position to advance from Group I, which also includes Norway and Iraq.
Earlier in the group, Norway thrashed Iraq 4-1, marking their first World Cup appearance since 1998. Despite the graphic mishap, France's performance on the pitch ensured they started their 2026 campaign on a positive note.
