BBC Axes Acclaimed Thriller Virdee After Single Series Run
In a significant blow to television enthusiasts, the BBC has decided to cancel the highly praised thriller Virdee after only one series. This decision comes despite the show receiving rave reviews and developing a loyal fanbase, with viewing numbers ultimately failing to meet the broadcaster's expectations for renewal.
Viewing Figures Fall Short of Viability Threshold
The six-part crime drama, which premiered in 2025 and was adapted from A A Dhand's best-selling novel series, did not attract sufficient audience numbers to justify a second season. An insider revealed to The Sun that there was considerable optimism surrounding Virdee, noting it offered a fresh take on the crime genre and successfully cultivated its own following.
Set in Bradford, the series featured DCI Harry Virdee, portrayed by Staz Nair, as he pursued a killer targeting the city's Asian community. The narrative also delved into personal conflicts, highlighting the outrage within Harry's Sikh family over his marriage to Saima, a Muslim character played by Aysha Kala.
Audience Reception and Critical Response
During its primetime Monday slot on BBC One, some episodes of Virdee averaged 743,000 viewers. When including iPlayer streams, the series reached an average of 3.3 million views. Despite this, the BBC has opted not to proceed with another season, though they have expressed interest in casting Staz Nair in future projects.
A BBC spokesperson commented, 'We'd like to thank Amit Dhand and the Virdee team for a brilliant series. We are really proud of the show and are talking to Amit about future projects.'
The series boasts a solid rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb and a critical score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have enthusiastically praised the show on social media, with one viewer stating, '#virdee was brilliant. Gripping and thrilling and always amazing seeing Bradford on screen!' Another added, 'Thoroughly enjoyed #Virdee on BBC iPlayer. A tough & entertaining crime drama about a troubled Sikh cop. Set in Bradford. Brilliantly filmed, superbly acted & cracking storylines. Loved it.'
Creator's Vision and Cast Details
In February 2025, author A A Dhand described adapting Virdee for television as a 'very natural progression.' He explained, 'I'd written the books as a long screenplay because I’m a very visual storyteller, so I always have pictures in my head. It just felt like a very natural progression to try and adapt it myself.' Dhand, who has long aspired to be a screenwriter, found the adaptation process rewarding as it allowed him to elevate the story for the screen.
The cast included notable actors such as Tobias Jowett as young Harry Virdee, Vikash Bhai as Riaz Hyatt, Danyal Ismail as DS Amin, Elizabeth Berrington as DS Conway, Sudha Bhuchar as Jyoti Virdee, and Kulvinder Ghir as Ranjit Virdee.
Mixed Reviews and Availability
While many viewers celebrated the series, not all critics were impressed. The Daily Mail's Christopher Stevens rated the show two out of five stars, indicating a divisive reception. Despite the cancellation, Virdee remains available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, allowing new audiences to discover the drama that captivated so many.
This cancellation underscores the challenging landscape of television production, where even critically acclaimed series must achieve robust viewing figures to secure their future. Fans of Virdee are left hoping that the show's legacy will inspire similar innovative crime dramas in the future.
