Bad Bunny Stars in Porto Rico Film After Super Bowl Success

Following his historic performance at Super Bowl LX earlier this month, Bad Bunny is embarking on a significant career transition into acting. The 31-year-old Puerto Rican music artist, whose real name is Benito Ocasio, will star in a full-length historical drama titled Porto Rico, set in his homeland.

Star-Studded Cast and Directorial Debut

Rapper Residente, born René Pérez Joglar, will make his directorial debut with this film. According to reports from Deadline, Bad Bunny will appear alongside acclaimed actors Javier Bardem, Edward Norton, and Viggo Mortensen. The project is being executive produced by five-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, adding substantial prestige to the production.

Bad Bunny's Expanding Acting Portfolio

This role marks a continuation of Bad Bunny's foray into acting, which began in 2021 with appearances in F9 and Narcos: Mexico. In 2022, he featured in the action film Bullet Train, followed by a role opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in 2023's Cassandro. Last year, he appeared in Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, demonstrating his versatility across genres.

His television credits include multiple appearances on Saturday Night Live, most recently hosting the season 51 premiere in October. These experiences have prepared him for this substantial cinematic undertaking.

Creative Vision and Historical Significance

Announcing the film this week, director Residente expressed his long-held ambition: 'I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child. Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy. This film is a reaffirmation of who we are – told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves.'

Edward Norton shared his enthusiasm for the project, comparing it to cinematic classics: 'This film sits in a tradition of films we deeply love, from The Godfather to Gangs of New York, that both thrill us with visceral drama and iconic characters and eras while also forcing us to face up to the shadow story under the American narrative of idealism.'

Norton further praised Residente's directorial potential: 'Everybody knows what a poet of language and rhythm René is. Now they’re going to see what a visual visionary he is as well. And bringing him and Bad Bunny together to tell the true story of Puerto Rico’s roots is going to be like a flame finding the stick of dynamite that’s been waiting for it.'

WWE Connections and Public Interest

Coinciding with this film announcement, Logan Paul has revealed his desire to face Bad Bunny in a WWE showdown, claiming it would 'be the biggest wrestling match of all time.' Bad Bunny previously competed against Damian Priest in WWE in 2021, showcasing his athletic abilities beyond music and acting.

Paul explained on his Impaulsive podcast that his recent comments about Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show were strategic: 'Let me peel back the curtain. Bad Bunny is a world-renowned superstar, right? He also can be a WWE superstar when he wants. He's a good wrestler – he can f***ing wrestle! There have been talks about maybe us wrestling, like it has been floated around and I've been candid about the fact that I would love to do it. I think it would be the greatest WWE match of all time, I really believe that.'

This intersection of entertainment spheres highlights Bad Bunny's multifaceted career and growing influence across music, film, and sports entertainment.
