Antiques Roadshow Diamond Necklace Stuns With £300k-£400k Valuation

An episode of Antiques Roadshow from 2015 has resurfaced, showing expert John Benjamin left astounded by a spectacular diamond and sapphire necklace and earrings set. The jewellery, brought in by the then Lord Mayor of Plymouth, was valued at between £300,000 and £400,000.

The piece was originally presented to the city by Nancy Astor, the first woman to take her seat in the House of Commons. In 1959, during a ceremony bestowing the Freedom of the City upon Lady Astor, she unexpectedly gave the diamond necklace and earrings to the then Lady Mayoress, Mrs Washburn, for the Lady Mayors to wear on special occasions.

John Benjamin examined the set, describing it as a 'diamond skipping rope' nearly four feet long, accompanied by subtle earrings. He identified it as a pre-First World War platinum, diamond and sapphire necklace, likely made by an American jeweller around 1910, and noted it could be broken down into six separate components, including bracelets.

When asked about insurance, the guest estimated around £300,000. Benjamin confirmed, 'I think it would sell for probably about £300,000 and £400,000 at least,' leaving the audience gasping. He emphasised the importance of provenance, noting the international appeal due to Lady Astor's fame in both the UK and the US.
