Stargate's Grand Return Confirmed for Prime Video
In an exciting development for science fiction enthusiasts, Amazon MGM Studios has officially confirmed that a brand new Stargate series is currently in production. This announcement comes three years after initial reports emerged about Amazon's interest in expanding the Stargate universe following their acquisition of MGM Studios.
Meet the Creative Force Behind the Revival
The project will be spearheaded by Martin Gero, who takes on the crucial roles of showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Gero brings significant experience to the franchise, having previously served as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis two decades ago.
"Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis," Gero reflected. "I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television - it's written into my DNA."
Beyond his Stargate background, Gero is recognised for developing the NBC drama Blindspot starring Thor's Jaimie Alexander, which enjoyed a successful five-season run. His other notable credits include masterminding the limited series Keep Breathing, The CW's Kung Fu, and the NBC revival of Quantum Leap.
Ambitious Vision for Beloved Franchise
While specific storyline details remain tightly guarded, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios Nick Pepper described the plans as "ambitious." He emphasised that the new chapter would honour the franchise's "rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future."
Gero made an extraordinary promise to both longtime fans and newcomers, stating: "For those who've kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith - this one's for you. And for those that are new to our world - I promise you're in for something extraordinary."
The Stargate franchise first burst onto screens with the 1994 blockbuster featuring James Spader and Kurt Russell before achieving television success with Stargate SG-1, which enjoyed a decade-long run. The universe expanded with Stargate Atlantis broadcasting for four years from 2004, followed by two additional films and three further programmes, including Stargate Origins in 2018.
With production now officially underway and a passionate showrunner at the helm, the Stargate franchise appears poised for a significant revival that aims to captivate both dedicated fans and a new generation of sci-fi viewers on Prime Video.
