Alison Hammond Faces Viewer Backlash Over Pronunciation Error on This Morning
Television presenter Alison Hammond has been criticised for yet another on-air blunder during Thursday's edition of ITV's This Morning. The 51-year-old host mispronounced the surname of Virginia Giuffre while discussing the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the disgraced royal formerly known as Prince Andrew.
Mountbatten-Windsor Arrest and Giuffre Allegations
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on Thursday under suspicion of misconduct in public office, though he was subsequently released without charge. The investigation into his conduct continues, with allegations that he passed confidential information to convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as UK trade envoy. This offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if proven.
Prior to these recent developments, Andrew faced serious allegations from Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was trafficked to him by Epstein while she was underage. The royal has consistently denied ever meeting Giuffre, despite reaching an out-of-court settlement with her worth millions of pounds.
Hammond's Pronunciation Mistake Draws Immediate Criticism
During the programme's discussion of these sensitive matters, Alison Hammond mispronounced Virginia Giuffre's surname as "Guff" rather than the correct "Giuffre." This error did not go unnoticed by This Morning viewers, who took to social media to express their frustration.
Viewer comments included:
- "Virginia Guff?? #ThisMorning"
- "Why doesn't Alison research correct pronunciation of people's names...? honestly, how did she get through the first interview stage #ThisMorning"
- "Alison calling Virginia Giuffre Virginia Guff. Honestly appalling presenter #ThisMorning"
- "Just when you think Alison's presenting skills couldn't get any worse, they do. #thismorning"
- "#ThisMorning delivering a grovelling 'serious debate' after Alison's 'Why would you arrest someone on their birthday?' cock up yesterday."
Hammond quickly corrected herself during the broadcast, telling viewers: "Sorry, it is Virginia Giuffre, I do apologise."
Emotional Discussion Surrounding the Arrest
The pronunciation error occurred during a particularly emotional segment of the programme. Guest Ashley James became visibly upset while discussing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest, dabbing tears from her eyes as she spoke about the delayed justice for Epstein's survivors.
"I felt very emotional watching this actually," James said. "There's a reason I feel so upset about it. So many of us have watched the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein try to get justice and I felt a huge sense of relief yesterday watching Andrew be arrested."
She continued: "Of course, his arrest is about state matters and not about the alleged sexual abuse of Virginia Giuffre, who of course is no longer here. I think the fact that it took so long and she is no longer here for justice to be served."
The panel discussion featured Ashley James alongside Gyles Brandreth, Lorraine Royal Editor Russell Myers, and presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary.
Pattern of Controversial Comments
This incident marks the second consecutive day that Alison Hammond has faced criticism for her handling of the Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor story. On Wednesday, viewers described her as "moronic" after she questioned why authorities would choose to arrest someone on their birthday.
This Morning airs weekdays on ITV1 from 10am and is available to stream on ITVX.
