A TV fan has spotlighted six lesser-known HBO series that they describe as "true gems that almost no one talks about," ranging from a drama by The Wire creator David Simon to a post-apocalyptic miniseries. The recommendations come from Spanish-language X account @fansdepantallas, which routinely champions overlooked shows.
Somebody Somewhere
This comedy-drama follows Sam Miller (Bridget Everett), a woman in her 40s navigating life after her sister's death. Jeff Hiller won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2025 for his role as Joel. @Fansdepantallas called it "one of the most human series of the last few years," adding: "It doesn't need big twists or action to move you. Just incredible characters, very natural humour, and conversations that feel like real life." All three seasons are available on NOW TV, Sky, and HBO Max.
The Deuce
Created by The Wire producer David Simon, this drama chronicles the rise of New York City's pornography industry in the 1970s. It stars James Franco in a dual role as twins and Maggie Gyllenhaal. @Fansdepantallas commented: "If you liked The Wire, give it a shot. David Simon portrays the birth of the adult film industry in 1970s New York with a spectacular level of detail. Very underrated." All three seasons are on NOW TV, Apple TV, and HBO Max.
High Maintenance
Originally a web series, this anthology follows different New Yorkers connected only by their marijuana dealer, 'The Guy'. @Fansdepantallas called it "a little gem that went unnoticed by many people. Original, funny, moving, and surprisingly deep." All four seasons are on HBO Max.
Irma Vep
This eight-episode miniseries, based on a 1996 French film, stars Alicia Vikander as an American actress in Paris whose identity blurs with the crime thriller character she plays. @Fansdepantallas described it as "metacinema, humour, drama, and tons of style. Very different from any other series." It streams on NOW TV and Sky.
The Baby
A British horror-comedy about a woman whose life is upended by a mysterious baby with supernatural powers. @Fansdepantallas said: "A very strange mix of horror, dark humour, and social critique. It starts from a completely absurd premise... and manages to make it work." The eight-episode series is on NOW TV and Sky.
Station Eleven
This 10-episode post-apocalyptic miniseries adapts John Mandel's novel, set 20 years after a flu pandemic collapses civilization. @Fansdepantallas noted: "It speaks much more about people, about art, and about how we move forward after a tragedy. For many, one of the best miniseries of recent years." It is not on UK streaming platforms but available to buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Sky Store.
