Rub a 10p Walnut on Scratched Wood Floors for a Quick Fix

Wooden floors can be easily scratched, but a 10p walnut from the cupboard may offer a simple solution. Barry Darragh, director at Wooden Floors, explains that walnuts contain natural oils and pigments that transfer into the wood surface when rubbed, softening the contrast between the scratch and the surrounding floor.

How the Walnut Hack Works

Darragh says: 'Walnuts contain natural oils and pigments which can transfer into the surface of the wood when rubbed against it. On lighter scuffs and surface marks, those oils can help soften the contrast between the scratch and the surrounding floor, making it less noticeable.'

He adds: 'It isn't going to magically remove a deep scratch, but for those little marks that catch your eye when the sunlight comes through the windows, it can be a handy little trick to improve how the floor looks.'

Why Scratches Become More Visible in Summer

As brighter days arrive, small imperfections that went unnoticed during darker months become obvious. Darragh notes: 'Wooden floors can very easily disguise small marks when there’s less light coming into your home but when the sun comes out and the curtains are open for longer, you start seeing every little scuff and scratch.'

Summer also increases the risk of scratches due to moving dining chairs, bringing outdoor furniture through the house, or rearranging rooms for gatherings. Grit or dirt caught under furniture feet can cause additional damage.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Walnut

  • Gently rub the inside of a walnut along the scratch, following the direction of the wood grain for smoothest results.
  • Leave it for a few minutes to allow the natural oils to settle on the wood's surface.
  • Buff the area with a soft cloth afterwards.

With bags of walnuts often costing around £2–£3, each walnut works out at roughly 10p, making it a much cheaper alternative to specialist scratch pens, repair kits or professional touch-ups for minor marks.
