Royal Mail Unveils Special Stamp Collection for Queen Elizabeth II's Centenary
In a poignant tribute to the late monarch, Royal Mail has announced the release of a special edition collection of stamps to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II's birth. The collection, unveiled ahead of the anniversary on 21 April, consists of 12 stamps that celebrate her life, reign, and personal passions.
A Tribute to a Historic Reign
The main set of eight stamps chronicles the life and work of Queen Elizabeth II, featuring photographs spanning from her early childhood to the later years of her reign. These images capture key moments in her unprecedented 70-year rule, which began with her accession to the throne on 6 February 1952.
David Gold of Royal Mail stated: "With these Special Stamps, we pay tribute to the late Queen, whose commitment to duty was unparalleled in history. The stamps tell the remarkable story of a very public life of dedicated service, and a more private passion for dogs and horses, about which Her Majesty was a renowned expert."
Celebrating Personal Passions
A further four stamps, presented in a miniature sheet, reflect Queen Elizabeth II's lifelong love of horses and dogs. This aspect of the collection highlights her deep connection to animals, which remained a constant throughout her life.
From her iconic corgis at Balmoral Castle to her presence at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, these stamps offer a glimpse into the monarch's personal interests beyond her official duties.
Historical Context and Legacy
Queen Elizabeth II's reign witnessed extraordinary global change. Born in the aftermath of the First World War and raised during the Second, she guided the monarchy through the Jet Age, the Space Age, and the Digital Age. Remarkably, more than half of the world's nations today did not exist in their present form when she ascended the throne.
Throughout her reign, the Queen's image was a constant feature on British stamps, appearing in various forms including the Wilding portrait, the Machin definitive, and the Gillick silhouette. She also featured prominently on stamps marking royal events such as birthdays, jubilees, and weddings.
Commemorative Events and Family Tributes
The stamp release coincides with commemorative events led by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. On Monday, 20 April, they will visit the new Royal Collection Trust exhibition, "Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style" at The King's Gallery in Buckingham Palace. This exhibition, the largest ever showcasing Elizabeth II's fashion, runs until October.
On Tuesday, 21 April, King Charles is expected to deliver a speech to the nation celebrating his mother's life and legacy. At 77, he is anticipated to convey how inspirational she was both personally to him and to the entire royal family.
A Monarch for the Ages
Queen Elizabeth II broke the reigning record of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, presiding over more change than any of her predecessors. She skillfully balanced modernizing the monarchy with maintaining connections to tradition, serving as:
- Devout Supreme Governor of the Church of England
- Proud Head of the Armed Forces
- Dedicated Head of the Commonwealth
Beyond her official roles, she was devoted to her family, having been married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, for over 73 years, and cherished time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Availability and Collectibility
The stamps and related collectible products are available for pre-order from today through Royal Mail's official channels. A Presentation Pack containing all 12 stamps is priced at £22.50, with general sales commencing on 21 April.
This special collection serves as a lasting tribute to a monarch whose dedication to service and connection to her people left an indelible mark on British history and the institution of the monarchy itself.
