Royal Visit Highlights Importance of Community and Family
The Prince of Wales made a heartfelt admission about the importance of supportive partners during a visit to a youth initiative in North Wales. While speaking with Scott Jenkinson, founder of Youth Shedz, Prince William agreed that 'behind every average man there is an even better wife', acknowledging the crucial role partners play in personal success stories.
Transforming Lives Through Support
Prince William visited Youth Shedz headquarters in Mochdre, North Wales, where he met Scott Jenkinson, who had previously faced homelessness and addiction. The Prince specifically asked Scott's wife, Sian, 'Were you there with Scott when he turned his life around?', recognising her supportive role in his recovery journey.
Scott emphasised that his transformation was possible 'with my wife behind me', prompting William's agreement and his now-familiar remark about the importance of supportive wives. The Prince was shown various weekly activities at the centre, including cooking, gaming, podcasting and 3D printing facilities.
Building Foundations for Young People
During his time at the youth centre, which supports young people facing complex challenges like homelessness and bullying, Prince William stressed the importance of strong foundations. 'I always say, if you can start working with really good people in your community, then they will connect you and you can work your way up like that', he told attendees.
The Prince spoke directly with children about their struggles with school and isolation, asking thoughtful questions about whether noise or crowded classrooms contributed to their difficulties. He emphasised the importance of talking to trusted adults and building solid foundations early in life.
Family Values and Community Spirit
Prince William strongly endorsed the centre's focus on family meals and connection, agreeing that children shouldn't be 'by screens or disappearing off elsewhere'. He supported Youth Shedz's mission to make sitting down and chatting fun for families, recognising that many no longer gather around the table to talk.
The Prince even received homemade earrings for Catherine from Scott and Sian's daughter, Emily, who showed him the cooking classes run after school. He described the youth space as 'amazing' and 'such an important part of the community', acknowledging its vital role in supporting local young people.
Scott Jenkinson founded Youth Shedz in 2017 after his own experiences with heroin addiction and homelessness in London. He expressed his vision to have 'a Youth Shedz in every town', even joking about establishing one at the palace. Regular attendee Emily noted that the Prince's visit had 'a really positive impact' on everyone at the centre.
