Strictly Come Dancing Faces Major Pro Dancer Cull in BBC Shake-Up
BBC's flagship entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing is reportedly undergoing its most significant transformation in over two decades, with multiple professional dancers facing the axe in what insiders describe as a "mass cull" of talent.
Multiple Professional Dancers Reportedly Dropped
According to new reports emerging this week, several established professional dancers have already been removed from the lineup as BBC executives implement what is being described as the biggest shake-up in the show's 22-year history. Among those reportedly affected are Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk, and Michelle Tsiakkas, who have all been informed they will not be returning for the upcoming series.
The changes come as the show continues to navigate the departure of long-time hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, who left at the conclusion of the previous series and have yet to be replaced. Now, additional reports suggest that further alterations to the professional lineup may still be forthcoming, with more dancers potentially facing removal as BBC bosses continue their comprehensive refresh of the popular dance competition.
Fan Favorites Potentially at Risk
Even established fan favorites are not immune to the ongoing changes. Karen Hauer, 43, who holds the distinction of being the show's longest-serving female professional after making her debut in 2012, could potentially be at risk despite her enduring popularity. Similarly, Katya Jones, 36, who joined Strictly ten years ago and famously won the Glitterball Trophy in 2017 with celebrity partner Joe McFadden, may also face uncertainty regarding her future on the program.
A source speaking to The Sun on Monday explained the rationale behind the substantial changes: "It's been some time since there was a 'churn' in the pro line-up, but they do happen every few years and there hasn't been a big one in some time. The way producers look at it is a little like running a football team: even after Manchester City win the league they still change their team around and bring in fresh blood constantly, to stay at the top of their game."
The source added: "A lot of the people going are now established names and stars in their own right but you have to remember that to be on the show, they also had to replace someone else at one point."
Nadiya Bychkova's Devastating Axing
Among the most notable departures is Nadiya Bychkova, who has been part of Strictly Come Dancing for eight years. During her tenure, she partnered with various celebrities including television presenter Dan Walker, singer Matt Goss, and actor Davood Ghadami. Most recently, she was paired with rugby player Chris Robshaw during the previous series.
Friends of the 36-year-old dancer have reportedly expressed outrage at her removal, with one source telling The Sun: "Her axing smacks of ageism. Nadiya's one of the most popular dancers so she can't understand why she won't be back. She's devastated – the show is her life."
Despite the professional setback, Nadiya appeared to maintain a brave face publicly, sharing a glamorous bikini photograph from her luxury holiday at the Regnum The Crown resort in Turkey, where nightly rates reportedly reach £3,000.
Additional Professional Dancers Affected
The cull extends beyond Nadiya Bychkova to include several other established professionals. Gorka Marquez, who met his British fiancée Gemma Atkinson on the show in 2017 and has participated in three finals during his decade on Strictly, has also reportedly been removed from the lineup.
Luba Mushtuk, who danced on the show for eight years but did not have a celebrity partner during the most recent series, has similarly been cut. Michelle Tsiakkas, who partnered with actor Jamie Borthwick last year (a pairing that generated controversy over behavior issues), has also been informed she will not be returning.
Further Changes to the Professional Lineup
Additional reports indicate that two more professional dancers will be affected, though in a different capacity. Neil Jones, 43, and Nancy Xu, 34, will reportedly not be assigned celebrity partners for the upcoming series, though they may still participate in group dance numbers. This represents a different status from Nadiya, Gorka, Luba, and Michelle, who appear to have been completely removed from the show.
The Daily Mail has contacted both the BBC and representatives for Nadiya Bychkova, Neil Jones, and Nancy Xu for comment regarding these substantial changes to the Strictly Come Dancing professional lineup.
