The new series of The Masked Singer UK has kicked off with a flurry of fan speculation, with many convinced a major 90s music star is hiding behind the Gargoyle costume.
Gargoyle Survives First Elimination
The seventh season premiered on ITV on Saturday, January 3, introducing the first group of mysterious performers. After Sloth, Can of Worms, Gargoyle, Disc Jockey, and Moth took to the stage, the audience vote placed Gargoyle and Disc Jockey in the bottom two.
The judging panel, consisting of Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan, and Maya Jama, opted to save Gargoyle. This decision led to the unmasking of Disc Jockey, who was revealed to be The One Show host Alex Jones.

Following the debut, a compelling theory has gained traction online, with numerous fans identifying Gargoyle as Marcella Detroit, the renowned singer from the duo Shakespears Sister.

The fan pointed to a clue involving a photo of Coronation Street's Sally Webster. Marcella Detroit co-wrote the Eric Clapton song 'Lay Down Sally'. Furthermore, she worked on his 1976 album 'No Reason to Cry', linking to the numerical clue '1976' given in the VT.
Other clues referenced not being 'pigeon-holed', which fans believe nods to Detroit's early career as a backing singer for major artists before her breakthrough with Shakespears Sister. The mention of January 13th is believed to reference the 1992 release date of the duo's iconic hit 'Stay'.
The theory gained support, with other social media users commenting on its plausibility. On stage, Gargoyle performed the Scissor Sisters' hit 'Filthy/Gorgeous', with judges guessing everyone from Chrissie Hynde to Frankie Bridge.
Professor Green Revealed as Tea Bag
The speculation continued as the second episode aired on Sunday, January 4, featuring a new batch of characters: Arctic Fox, Conkers, Toastie, Tea Bag, Yak, and Monkey Business.
This round concluded with Tea Bag being eliminated and unmasked as rapper Professor Green. Speaking to host Joel Dommett after the reveal, he admitted the mask made singing challenging but enjoyed the chance to 'be silly' and hide his identity.
