Florida's 'Candy Lady' and Husband Receive Lengthy Prison Sentences for Distributing Drug-Infused Snacks to Children

A Florida couple who gained notoriety for disguising dangerous drugs as children's snacks and selling them in their Tampa neighbourhood have been sentenced to decades behind bars. Renee Stephens, 32, famously known as the "Candy Lady," has been handed a 60-year prison term following her conviction on fentanyl trafficking charges. Her husband, Vincent Stephens, currently incarcerated on prior drug and firearm offences, received an additional 30-year sentence to be served consecutively with his existing 20-year term.

Operation Uncovered Through Undercover Investigation

The investigation into the Stephens' illicit activities commenced in August 2023 when the Florida Department of Law Enforcement received a tip regarding suspected drug trafficking. Undercover agents subsequently conducted a series of controlled purchases over three months, during which they observed Renee Stephens handling fentanyl while holding her infant child. Authorities confirmed the child was present during multiple drug transactions, highlighting significant child endangerment concerns.

Significant Drug Seizure During Home Raid

On December 11, 2023, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the Stephens' residence, uncovering substantial evidence. Officers seized 153 grams of fentanyl, 100 fentanyl pills, marijuana, and 63 individually packaged snacks resembling popular children's foods that were actually laced with drugs. Former Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody emphasised the lethal potential of the confiscated fentanyl, stating it contained "enough to kill nearly 80,000 people."

Coordinated Criminal Activity from Prison

Investigators determined that Vincent Stephens, while already incarcerated, was orchestrating the drug operation from prison. He communicated with his wife via telephone and Facebook to coordinate deals and connect her with other inmates. This sophisticated coordination demonstrated the couple's persistent disregard for legal boundaries despite Vincent's existing imprisonment.

Convictions and Official Statements

Renee Stephens was arrested in December 2023 and convicted in January 2026 on multiple charges including conspiracy to traffic fentanyl, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Vincent Stephens was convicted of conspiracy to traffic fentanyl and will serve his new sentence after completing his current term.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier condemned the couple's actions in an official statement, noting: "This couple was not only profiting from pushing poison into our communities, but they were also doing it in the presence of a young, vulnerable child. These drug traffickers have proven multiple times that they have no regard for the law." He expressed gratitude to prosecutors Luis Aguila and Gianna Fina for securing the lengthy sentences that will keep the offenders imprisoned for decades.
