Jessie J clarifies 2014 bisexuality comments: 'I'm always attracted to women'
Jessie J addresses 2014 bisexuality 'phase' comments

Singer Jessie J has addressed controversial comments she made about her sexuality back in 2014, acknowledging that her wording likely caused hurt to her former partner.

Clarifying Past Remarks

In a candid new interview with The Guardian, the Price Tag artist reflected on describing her relationship with a woman as 'a phase' following their breakup eleven years ago. The original comments had drawn criticism from the LGBT+ community at the time.

Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, explained that she had misworded her feelings. 'It wasn't me saying I'm not bisexual,' stated the 37-year-old. 'I think I'm always going to be attracted to women.'

The singer emphasised her honesty about her attractions but expressed reluctance about public labelling. 'I'm so honest and open about it, but I don't want a label on it, like 'Jessie J the bisexual singer',' she added.

Reflecting on Past Relationship

When asked if she remained in contact with her ex-partner, Cornish replied, 'no, not any more.'

She expressed regret about how her previous comments might have affected her former partner, with whom she shared a serious relationship. 'I'm sure it hurt her because our relationship was amazing and we were really serious,' she continued. 'We lived together for a long time: around three years.'

Addressing Personal Challenges

Beyond discussing her sexuality, the interview covered several profound personal challenges the artist has faced recently.

Cornish opened up about her experience with cancer treatment earlier this year, a miscarriage, and the devastating suicide of her close friend and bodyguard Dave Last in 2018.

Her new song 'I'll Never Know Why' was written about Last, whom she described as 'lost and hopeless'. 'I miss him so much, man,' she said. 'He was my guy for seven years. He was like my big brother.'

She expressed sadness that 'there was a loneliness there that meant it got to that before he would call me,' and hopes her song can help others facing similar struggles.

Regarding her health battles, including breast cancer treatment, Cornish credited her parents for their supportive approach. 'My mum and dad always did such a great job of not making that the definitive thing in my life,' she said.

She revealed these experiences have prompted positive lifestyle changes, stating they've 'made me live life more, eat better, work out more' and 'made me live in the moment.'

Jessie J's new album 'Don't Tease Me With a Good Time' is out now.
