Ryan Gosling's Daughters Shape His Character in New Sci-Fi Film
Hollywood star Ryan Gosling has opened up about how his two daughters with partner Eva Mendes directly influenced his sartorial choices in his latest movie, Project Hail Mary. The actor, who also serves as a producer on the film, shared that family-friendly entertainment is a priority for the couple, leading him to take an active role in creating content they can all enjoy together.
A Family-Focused Production
Gosling explained that he and Mendes consistently seek out films they can experience with their children to create lasting core memories. "We always want to find films that we can bring our kids to and have that core memory moment, but they're hard to find," he admitted. "I felt like, OK, well, we might just have to make it." This family-oriented approach motivated his involvement in bringing the sci-fi adventure to the big screen.
The couple, who have been together since 2011, are parents to two daughters: Esmeralda, aged 11, and Amada, aged nine. Gosling revealed that his children played an unexpected but crucial role in shaping his character's appearance in the film.
The Glasses Decision
In a candid interview with USA Today, Gosling recounted how one of his daughters persuaded him to wear spectacles for his role as a middle school science teacher. "When I was playing with the character, just trying stuff out, and I threw on some glasses, my daughter went: 'You look smarter with glasses,'" he recalled. Gosling responded humorously, "Well, thank you very much. I think I will be wearing these in the film. Thank you for that note."
He emphasized that his daughters have viewed multiple cuts of the film and provided extensive feedback. "They've seen many cuts, and they've given many notes," Gosling said, describing Esmeralda and Amada as "the harshest critics, but they are always right, for the most part, and they've really been so helpful." In another interview with Access, he added, "My kids have seen multiple cuts. They give me multiple notes. They're basically the only critics I care about, and they are very critical and very honest."
Project Hail Mary's Success
Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller—the duo behind hits like The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—premiered in theaters last Friday. Based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel, the film has earned rave reviews, achieving an impressive 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Gosling stars as a science teacher who teams up with an extraterrestrial being on a mission to save the sun from burning out.
Gosling previously stated that he made the movie "for" his daughters, expressing his honor in creating a film the whole family can enjoy. "As a family, I'd like a movie like this that I'd like to see. I just feel really honored that I got to make one," he shared.
A Private Hollywood Romance
Gosling and Mendes have maintained a notably private relationship since meeting on the set of the 2011 crime thriller The Place Beyond the Pines. Despite Mendes occasionally referring to Gosling as her "husband," the couple has never confirmed whether they are officially married, keeping their romance largely out of the public eye.
However, Gosling made a rare public gesture of affection this month for Mendes's 52nd birthday, surprising her on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He called her onstage unexpectedly and serenaded her with Happy Birthday, accompanied by a high school marching band holding a flag that read, "Happy Birthday, Eva!"
This display echoes his heartfelt tribute at the 2017 Golden Globes, where he thanked Mendes while accepting an award for La La Land. He praised her for supporting their family during challenging times, saying, "If she hadn't have taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today." He also dedicated the award to the memory of her brother, Juan Carlos Mendes.
Through their discreet yet enduring partnership, Gosling and Mendes continue to blend their personal and professional lives, with their daughters now playing an integral role in creative decisions.
