Emma Hayes Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Father During ITV World Cup Coverage
Emma Hayes Emotional Tribute to Late Father on ITV World Cup

Emma Hayes delivered a heartfelt tribute to her late father during ITV's World Cup coverage of Belgium vs Iran on Sunday, while also addressing the sexist abuse she has faced online. The former Chelsea Women manager, now head coach of the United States women's team, has been part of ITV's New York-based punditry team throughout the tournament.

Father's Day Tribute

After wrapping up her tactical analysis segment, Hayes paused before handing back to the live match action to honor her father, Sid, who passed away in 2023. Marking Father's Day, she said: "One last thing, happy Father's Day to everyone at home. I know it's a great day and it's also my father's heavenly birthday today and I want to say one thing to you dad up in heaven. Thank you for giving me so much confidence to have the opportunity to do this and so I leave you with this beautiful view." She then turned to reveal the message 'she will change the world' printed on the back of her jacket.

Her father Sid was instrumental in helping build Arsenal women into a dominant force and establishing youth leagues in Regent's Park.

Sexism Controversy

Hayes' tribute came against a backdrop of criticism aimed at ITV, with the broadcaster accused of sexism after fans described her on-air treatment as 'demeaning.' She was asked to deliver tactical analysis while bent over wooden cabinets that many felt resembled a 'kitchen,' while the main pundits remained in a high-tech studio setup.

Television presenter Dan Walker said: "I really like Emma Hayes and I think she's an insightful pundit. I'm not sure why they have decided to make it look like she's writing the specials on a bistro chalkboard!" Others on social media criticized the setup, with one user writing: "Why in the highkey misogyny is the only female pundit on ITV football broadcasting from a kitchen." Another commented: "They must change the presentation of Emma Hayes. Her analysis is superb. Sticking her in a kitchen with a chalkboard is setting women's football back a decade."

Support and Changes

Despite the criticism, many viewers showed support for Hayes after her subtle response. One wrote: "Seems technically more knowledgeable than many of the men," while another said: "Had a lump in my throat watching that. What a legend." ITV has since tweaked the setup, giving Hayes an upgraded magnetic tactics board and a tighter camera shot that reveals less of the surrounding set.

Hayes is one of the most decorated managers in the women's game, winning seven Women's Super League titles and five FA Cups during her 12-year spell at Chelsea. She also guided the US women's team to gold at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
