Donald Glover Shares Promising Update on Community Movie After 11 Years
Donald Glover has delivered a reassuring update to fans regarding the long-anticipated Community movie, more than a decade after the beloved sitcom concluded its television run. The actor and musician, who portrayed Troy Barnes in the series, has emphatically stated that the project is actively in development, despite persistent delays and scheduling conflicts that have plagued production.
Cast Reunions and Scheduling Hurdles
The film continuation of Community, which originally aired on NBC from 2009 to 2015, was officially confirmed over three years ago. The announcement promised the return of the core cast, including Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown later confirmed their involvement, though Chevy Chase is not attached to the project.
However, aligning the schedules of the ensemble cast has proven to be a significant obstacle, leading to widespread speculation among fans about whether the movie would ever materialise. Glover addressed these concerns directly, stating, "We're working on it right now." He further emphasised his sincerity, telling Entertainment Tonight, "I know everybody's been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I'm not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon."
Behind-the-Scenes Developments
According to Glover, the cast members maintain a group text chain where they enthusiastically discuss the film's progress. The project is being produced for the US streaming service Peacock, with series creator Dan Harmon co-writing the script alongside Andrew Guest, the writer of the fan-favourite episode "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons."
Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger, provided additional context in March 2025, revealing on the podcast Dinner's On Me that financing has been secured and a script has been completed. "Well, we got the money, which is one of the harder things to do. And everyone's in," McHale explained. "It's really coming down to schedules and a script was written. So all that is real. And I know that we have been talking about it for literally years, but it will happen. It's just getting those schedules together."
A Long-Awaited Promise Fulfilled
The phrase "six seasons and a movie" originated as a self-referential joke within the early seasons of Community, but it quickly evolved into a passionate fan campaign. NBC Universal Television's chairman of entertainment, Susan Rovner, acknowledged this legacy in a statement, noting, "'Six seasons and a movie' started out as a cheeky line from Community's early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious and cool (cool, cool) NBC comedy."
Rovner added, "We're incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can't wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences." The press release for the film describes it as "the least predictable movie of a TV series that referenced a lot of movies and TV," staying true to the show's meta-humour and inventive storytelling.
As Glover promotes his new film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, his commitment to the Community project remains unwavering. With the cast eager, financing secured, and a script in place, the long-delayed movie appears closer than ever to becoming a reality, offering hope to fans who have waited patiently for over a decade.
