CMA Awards 2024: Ella Langley & Riley Green Win Big

The 59th annual CMA Awards kicked off with a major win for Ella Langley and Riley Green, who were the first victors announced during Wednesday night's ceremony from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

A Night of Firsts and Honours

The duo took home the coveted award for Single of the Year for their hit track, 'You Look Like You Love Me'. This early triumph set the tone for an evening celebrating the best of country music.

The event was steered by host Lainey Wilson, who is no stranger to the CMA stage. Upon her entrance, Wilson warmly welcomed the audience, saying, 'Welcome to the CMA Awards.' She shared a poignant glimpse into her childhood, revealing, 'I grew up in the village of Baskin in Louisiana, population 175.'

Host Lainey Wilson's Heartfelt Tribute

Wilson spoke passionately about the role country music played in her upbringing, stating it was 'more than a genre, it was a way of life.' She fondly recalled her family's unwavering priorities: 'Growing up in Baskin, there were two things my family made dang sure we never missed, and that was bull riding and the CMA awards - and if we had to miss one, it wasn't gonna be this.'

Her emotions were palpable as she reflected on her journey, adding that being asked to host 'this legendary country music event' made her younger, 'bright eyed and bushy tailed' self 'really, really proud.'

Leading Nominees and a Lifetime Achievement

Wilson wasn't just hosting; she was also a leading contender. She was one of the leading nominees for the award show, with Ella Langley, Megan Moroney, and Lainey Wilson herself all nominated for six honours apiece.

Wilson faced stiff competition for the CMA Entertainer of the Year award, going up against an impressive field consisting of Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, and the 2024 victor, Morgan Wallen.

In a special segment of the show, the legendary Vince Gill was slated to be given the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, honouring his profound impact on the Music City scene and the industry at large.
