Icelandic singer Björk is set to host a unique 'eclipse rave' in Iceland this summer, coinciding with a total solar eclipse. The event will take place on 12 August 2026 in Hafnarfjörður, a location within the path of totality for the celestial phenomenon.
Event Details and Performances
Björk will DJ at the rave alongside Venezuelan musician Arca and other local Icelandic artists. This performance is part of her Mánakvöld series, which aims to connect music with natural events, offering attendees a multisensory experience during the eclipse.
Eclipse Experience and Timing
During the rave, participants will witness a brief moment of complete darkness as the total solar eclipse occurs. Experts note that the greatest duration for this eclipse will be a relatively short two minutes and 18 seconds, just off the coast of northwest Iceland.
Connection to Echolalia Exhibition
The eclipse rave aligns with Björk's Echolalia exhibition at the National Gallery of Iceland, running from 30 May to 20 September 2026 as part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival. This immersive exhibition features installations linked to her 2022 album Fossora, drawing inspiration from Iceland's volcanic terrains and dramatic coasts.
Additional Festival Activities
Elsewhere in Iceland, the Iceland Eclipse festival will host a four-day event from 12 to 15 August 2026 in the town of Hellissandur. This festival includes music performances, fire ceremonies, and science workshops, designed to celebrate the solar eclipse and the Perseids meteor shower.
With low light pollution in the wilderness beneath the Snæfellsjökull volcano, both celestial events are expected to be visible on site. The festival lineup features global headliners and Icelandic acts such as Meduza3, Booka Shade, Nightmares on Wax, and Cici, performing under Iceland's midnight sun.
Festival Philosophy and Invitation
Organizers of the Iceland Eclipse festival invite attendees to dance, learn, connect, and explore through music, ceremony, storytelling, and inspiring experiences. They emphasize that while most events build toward a celestial moment, this festival begins with it, highlighting the unique opportunity to experience natural wonders in a communal setting.
