A former contestant on the hit BBC game show The Wheel has revealed the one crucial instruction all players are given regarding the programme's host, comedian Michael McIntyre. Jess Smith, who appeared on the show in 2024, shared exclusive behind-the-scenes details from her experience.
The One Rule You Mustn't Break With Michael McIntyre
In an exclusive chat, Jess Smith disclosed the specific guidance given about interacting with the show's famous presenter. "They did say don't try to outwit Michael McIntyre because you won't be able to - which was very funny," she revealed. This directive highlights the host's renowned quick wit and comedic control over the fast-paced show.
Smith, 34, also confirmed that Michael McIntyre's on-screen persona is genuine. "He was exactly the same when the cameras weren't rolling," she said, describing how he continued chatting with both celebrities and contestants during breaks, making the experience feel authentic.
Behind the Scenes: Outfits, Swearing and No Phones
Jess outlined several other rules and preparations contestants face before filming begins on the BBC One programme. Participants are asked not to swear, a rule Smith admits she accidentally broke at one point. They must also bring three different outfits for producers to approve, with a strict ban on any clothing featuring visible logos.
"Luckily they picked the outfit I wanted to wear, so I was really pleased," she added. Another key instruction is to talk through answers and reasoning aloud. "You have to talk through your answers and talk through why you are choosing them. They want you to really have a chat," Smith explained, noting this made interactions with the celebrity panel more natural.
All personal devices are confiscated, with contestants forbidden from having mobile phones or watches with them during filming to prevent any external communication or timekeeping.
The Scale of The Wheel Set and Celebrity Encounters
One of the biggest surprises for Jess was the sheer size of the studio. "The set was much bigger than I expected, it was just a much larger scale. It was humungous," she said, while affirming that the show viewers see at home is an accurate representation of the in-studio experience.
During her episode, Smith was joined on the iconic revolving wheel by celebrities including Russell T Davies, William Hanson, Bash the Entertainer, Harry Redknapp, Lucy Beaumont, and Deborah Meaden. While she didn't meet the stars off-camera, the format allowed for genuine conversation during the game.
The Wheel, which sees contestants answer questions with help from a rotating panel of famous experts, continues to air on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday nights.
