Martin Scorsese's Film Recommendation Dilemma with 10-Year-Old Co-Star

At the New York City premiere of the Apple TV film Outcome, rising young star Cary Christopher shared a memorable interaction with legendary director Martin Scorsese that left the filmmaker reconsidering his usual recommendations.

A Sweet Memory from the Set

The 10-year-old actor, who stars alongside Scorsese in the dark comedy directed by Jonah Hill, recounted how Scorsese began listing his classic films like Raging Bull and Taxi Driver before realizing his young co-star might not be ready for such mature content.

"I knew he was a legendary director and he was giving me a list of his movies like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver," Christopher told The Independent on the red carpet. "Then he was like, 'You probably can't watch any of those quite yet, but there is this one movie I directed called Hugo.'"

A Thoughtful Follow-Up

Scorsese's consideration didn't end with that conversation. "A couple days later, in the mail, I received a copy of Hugo on Blu-ray from his office, which is really crazy," the young actor recalled, referring to Scorsese's 2011 family-friendly film.

This thoughtful gesture highlights the director's awareness of appropriate content for younger audiences, despite his reputation for creating some of cinema's most intense adult dramas.

Working with Hollywood A-Listers

For Christopher, working alongside major stars including Scorsese, Keanu Reeves, Jonah Hill, and Cameron Diaz on Outcome is becoming familiar territory. The young actor has already starred in Weapons and received an Emmy nomination for his work on Days of Our Lives.

Still, he's taking careful note of how these established performers approach their craft. "I noticed they're just always grounded and always in the moment, which is really good, I think, for everyone," Christopher observed about his Outcome co-stars.

The Outcome Production

The film, which follows Keanu Reeves' character Reef Hawk as he confronts his "hidden demons" after career-threatening blackmail, features an impressive ensemble cast including Laverne Cox, Kaia Gerber, Susan Lucci, David Spade, Atsuko Okatsuka, Ivy Wolk and Roy Wood Jr.

While Outcome was filmed nearly two years ago and faced delays before its April 10 release on Apple TV, Christopher has remained busy. He recently wrapped his time on Days of Our Lives and is slated to appear in the forthcoming MGM+ series Spider-Noir.

Navigating Horror Elements

Christopher also shared insights about working on the horror elements of Weapons with Oscar-winning star Amy Madigan when he was just nine years old. "Because they knew it was a horror movie and I was nine when it was shooting, when there was a horror effect they would show me how it works, which is really amazing," he explained.

While admitting to some initial anxiety about the scary film, Christopher found the experience ultimately rewarding. "It ended up actually being kind of funny to see the horror effects," he revealed, demonstrating his growing comfort with diverse film genres despite his young age.

This interaction between Scorsese and his young co-star offers a heartwarming glimpse into the thoughtful considerations that can occur between generations of filmmakers, even on projects dealing with mature themes.
