Clarkson's Farm Vet Dilwyn Evans on Jeremy Clarkson

Clarkson's Farm has returned to Prime Video with the final two episodes of season five, and one of its long-standing cast members is veterinarian Dilwyn Evans. The Welsh vet, from Llanddewi Brefi in Ceredigion, was recommended to Jeremy Clarkson by a neighbor and has been caring for the farm's animals since the show began.

Dilwyn Evans: A Retired Vet with a Passion for Farming

Now retired and in his early 60s, Dilwyn devotes much of his time to helping Clarkson manage the animals at Diddly Squat Farm. In the new season, he performs a graphic post-mortem on a dead sheep, a scene so disturbing that Clarkson had to apologize to viewers. Dilwyn has been through much with the former Top Gear host, from detecting a devastating TB diagnosis to assisting with various animal births.

What Jeremy Clarkson Is Really Like, According to Dilwyn

Speaking to BBC Radio Cymru, Dilwyn revealed what Clarkson is truly like behind the scenes. "Sometimes you think he's joking, but his questions are completely genuine – you have to tell him what's what and that's how he learns," he said. "Jeremy has learned a lot during the programme. The work is on a different scale to being a vet, but the phone may go off at any time asking for help." Dilwyn added, "I believe I have been very lucky – I was in the right place at the right time."

Reflecting on Clarkson's progress, Dilwyn noted: "He didn't know a lot at the beginning, but now he knows how animals behave. He looks more like a farmer during the course of the programme."

Dilwyn's Background and Inspiration

Farming has always been part of Dilwyn's life. He grew up on a 67-acre farm with four siblings. "Things were tight," he admitted. "My parents never had a holiday, and we only used to go away for a day trip – to the Royal Welsh, for example. We milked the cows before and after our trip. There wasn't enough money for us all to go on a school trip – we took turns."

He studied veterinary medicine at Edinburgh, inspired by the beloved James Herriot series All Creatures Great and Small. "Seeing All Creatures Great and Small as a child encouraged me to be a vet, and I saw myself as a James Herriot," he explained. His mother encouraged him to pursue his academic talents rather than take over the family farm.

Dilwyn is active on Instagram, where he shares his passions outside veterinary work, including football and day trips with his wife, Helen.
