Voicemails for Isabelle Nearly Starred Different A-Lister

Netflix's new romantic comedy Voicemails for Isabelle is poised to become a major streaming hit, but did you know it nearly starred a completely different A-list actress in the lead role?

A Different Lead Originally Cast

The film, now starring Zoey Deutch as Jill, was initially developed with Hailee Steinfeld in the role. Deutch plays an aspiring pastry chef grieving the loss of her sister, Isabelle (Ciara Bravo). She leaves cathartic voicemails to her old number, unaware that it has been reassigned to real estate agent Wes (Nick Robinson), who gradually falls for her voice.

The pair eventually meet in San Francisco, but Wes struggles to admit a secret that could tear their relationship apart.

Original Plans and Delays

Announced back in 2019, the film was to be directed by Sharon Maguire, known for Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel. Steinfeld, fresh off Bumblebee and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was cast as the lead. However, the project faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Hollywood writers' strikes.

Steinfeld's reasons for dropping out remain unclear, but her schedule has since filled up. Director Maguire also left, with screenwriter Leah McKendrick taking over directing duties and also starring as Breeda.

Production Changes

Originally produced by Sony Pictures for a theatrical release, Netflix later took over distribution. Since then, Steinfeld's career has soared, including roles in Hawkeye as Kate Bishop and the Oscar-nominated Sinners.

Voicemails for Isabelle is now available to stream on Netflix.
