The Voice Star's Heartbreaking Final Social Media Update Before Fatal Incident
Ifunanya Nwangene, a talented singer who rose to fame on The Voice Nigeria in 2021, tragically passed away over the weekend at the age of just 26 after suffering a snake bite. Her final Instagram post, shared shortly before her death, revealed she had been actively working on new music and was looking forward to advancing her career.
Promising Career Cut Short by Sudden Tragedy
The 26-year-old artist, known for her powerful performances, had amassed thousands of followers on social media and was performing regularly at events like weddings. In her initial audition for The Voice Nigeria, she impressed judges with a rendition of Rihanna's classic Take A Bow, eventually making it to the final 24 contestants. Her collaborator, Tbrass, posted on her Instagram page alongside a series of photos, writing: "I’m grateful to have these wonderful artists @patthesingingbird @nanyah_music on my new project and I can’t wait to share the details with y’all soon. Stay tuned for more."
Just days into the new year, Ifunanya also expressed her deep religious faith in a post, stating: "Goodness of God - Cece Winans As simple as this song sounds, it's so true. God is faithful and God is so good." This poignant message highlighted her personal beliefs amidst her professional aspirations.
Confirmation of Death and Tributes from the Music Community
Her death was confirmed by Sam C. Ezugwu, music director of the Amemuso Choir, in a Facebook statement that read: "Amemuso Choir regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano, Ifunanya Nwangene, who passed away yesterday, 31st January 2026, at the Federal Medical Centre due to a snake bite." The statement added, "A rising star, Ifunanya was on the cusp of sharing her incredible talent with the world. Her voice and spirit will be deeply missed."
Following her passing, Tbrass posted footage of Nwangene recording what would have been her new song as part of a heartfelt tribute. He wrote on Instagram: "An irreplaceable loss to the Abuja music society and Nigeria at large. My hand and heart feels very heavy writing this, because it is unimaginable losing such a young promising great, talented music artist who touched so many lives, it is very heartbreaking-especially in Nigeria where music runs deep in our souls and connects us all."
He continued, "The pain of saying goodbye to someone whose voice and energy brought joy, inspiration, and even healing to many is heavy. From her unique voice, to the stories she told through songs, and the way she represented our culture and struggles, Nanya was a true artist who left an irreplaceable mark."
Controversy Surrounding Medical Treatment and Allegations
Her friend Hillary Obinna explained shortly after the tragedy that "the snake bite woke [Ifunanya] up" and alleged that she had tried to seek out antivenom at a local clinic but none was available, so she went to a local hospital. Speaking to the BBC, he added: "While they were trying to stabilise her, she could not speak but she could make hand gestures. She was struggling to breathe."
However, the hospital denied these claims, stating they were "unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation." The Federal Medical Centre in Jabi issued a statement saying: "Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom."
This tragic incident has left the music community and fans mourning the loss of a young artist with immense potential, whose final social media updates now serve as a bittersweet reminder of her unfulfilled dreams and vibrant spirit.
