Vet Lists Five Safe Fruits for Dogs as Healthy Treats
Vet Lists Five Safe Fruits for Dogs as Healthy Treats

A veterinarian with a large online following has shared a list of five fruits that can be safely added to a dog's diet as a healthier alternative to shop-bought treats. The advice comes as more pet owners seek natural options for rewarding their animals.

Top of the list is watermelon, which is about 90 per cent water and provides vitamins A and C. The vet, Amir Anwary, known online as @amirthevet, recommended it as a hydrating snack, especially in hot weather. He stressed that seeds and rind must be removed before feeding to prevent digestive problems.

Strawberries and apples were also highlighted. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants, while apples provide fibre and vitamins A and C. The vet noted that apple seeds and core should be removed due to traces of cyanide compounds.

Bananas can be given in small amounts as they are rich in potassium, vitamins, and fibre, but are high in sugar. Blueberries, described as a superfood, are packed with antioxidants and support immune function and digestion.

The charity Blue Cross warns that some foods, including grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, avocado, and chocolate, are toxic to dogs. Owners are advised to contact a vet immediately if their pet consumes anything harmful.
