Jean-Claude Van Damme's Humble Beginnings with Chuck Norris
Hollywood icon Jean-Claude Van Damme has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late martial arts and acting legend Chuck Norris, revealing an extraordinary story from his early career struggles. In an exclusive interview, Van Damme disclosed that he once slept in his car outside Norris' house to ensure he wouldn't be late for their training sessions.
A Friendship Forged in Martial Arts
Speaking to the Mirror, Van Damme, affectionately known as 'The Muscles from Brussels', recounted how he first met Chuck Norris in his late teens while trying to break into the acting industry. At the time, Van Damme spoke very little English and was becoming disillusioned with his efforts to make it in Hollywood.
The turning point came after an invitation to the home of 'Enter the Dragon' star Bob Wall. It was Wall who urged his friend Chuck Norris to meet and train with the young Belgian martial artist, reportedly telling Norris he had "never saw legs like this" before.
Early Morning Training and Car Sleeping
Following this introduction, Van Damme described how the pair began taking early morning training sessions together. "I would travel for two hours to train with him," Van Damme revealed in a 2023 conversation. So determined was he not to miss these sessions that he admitted to sometimes sleeping in his car outside Norris' house rather than risk being late.
These rigorous training sessions saw Van Damme sparring with what he described as "wackos" on some occasions, while other times he was paired with world champions like Joe Jackson. The intense training regimen helped hone the skills that would later make him famous.
From Training Partner to Hollywood Breakthrough
Van Damme's connection with Chuck Norris proved instrumental in launching his film career. Norris featured the young martial artist in the 1984 film 'Missing in Action', which was shot in the Philippines. This breakthrough role paved the way for Van Damme's later success in films like 'Bloodsport', which remains one of his most iconic performances.
A Lasting Bond and Final Tribute
More than forty years after their first meeting, the bond between the two martial arts stars remained strong. Following Norris' passing at age 86, Van Damme shared a touching tribute on Instagram, posting several photographs of the pair from over the years.
In his emotional message, Van Damme wrote: "Deepest condolences on the passing of my friend, Chuck Norris. We knew each other from my early days, and I always respected the man he was. My heart and prayers are with his family. He will never be forgotten."
According to reports, Chuck Norris suffered a medical emergency on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. A statement on his official Instagram page confirmed his passing, describing him as "a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather" who "inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives."
Van Damme's revelation about sleeping in his car outside Norris' house underscores the determination and sacrifice that characterized his early career, and highlights the mentorship role that Chuck Norris played in helping launch one of Hollywood's most recognizable action stars.
