Toy Story 5 has arrived, and actress Joan Cusack, who voices Jessie in the franchise, has revealed a powerful and cruel moment in the latest film that left her breathless.
A Cruel Scene That Shocked Joan Cusack
Joan Cusack, the voice of Jessie since 1999, spoke about a particularly harsh scene in Toy Story 5. In an interview with Metro, she said: "When those girls make fun of Bonnie, there's some cruelty in it, which I can't believe they captured so well. It took my breath away. I can't believe they captured that."
The scene involves Bonnie, who became the toys' owner at the end of Toy Story 3, struggling to make friends. Her parents give her a tablet called Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee, which connects her to classmates via 'the Pond'. This leads to trouble and a devastating moment that even made new cast member Greta Lee cry.
Jessie Takes the Spotlight
In this fifth installment, Buzz Lightyear and Woody step back as Jessie becomes the central character. Cusack admitted the shift was a surprise: "There really weren't any discussions. It was just, I got a phone call saying, 'It's gonna be Jessie's story'. I was like 'Whaaat?!' and then so excited."
Cusack noted she only knew snippets of the plot until seeing the final film, calling the experience "kind of wild." Greta Lee echoed this, describing the process as a "slow reveal."
Real-Life Issues in an Animated World
Both actresses praised the franchise for mirroring real-life issues despite being about toys. Cusack said: "It's so cool, it's so neat." The film has received critical praise for its message, and Taylor Swift contributed a hit song to the soundtrack.
Toy Story 5 continues the legacy of the beloved series, offering nostalgia and emotional depth for audiences of all ages.
