Tom Ellis Hints at Lucifer Return, No Regrets Over Show Ending

Tom Ellis, star of the hit Netflix series Lucifer, has revealed that he has no regrets about the show ending after its upcoming sixth season, but hints at a possible return. Speaking to TV Guide, Ellis admitted he had 'made peace' with the conclusion after initially believing season five would be the finale.

'We thought Season 5 was the end, so in a sense, mentally, I made peace with the fact that we've gone full circle with this story,' Ellis said. However, he noted that showrunners were able to 'break it down' and find 'somewhere we've never been before, especially performing the character of Lucifer'. He added that season six offers a dynamic he had not touched on before, echoing Lucifer's feelings of abandonment from earlier seasons.

Co-star Lauren German, who plays Chloe Decker, told fans they 'are going to like how it ends', describing the season as featuring 'eye-opening adventures and epiphanies' for every character. The sixth and final season was confirmed by Netflix in June 2021, with a tweet stating: 'The devil made us do it. #Lucifer will return for a sixth and final season. Like, FINAL final.'

Plot details remain under wraps, but showrunners Joe Henderson and Idly Modrovich have said the extra episodes allow them to 'really explore how our characters end up where they ended up'. The season five finale saw Lucifer's father God retire, sparking a competition between Lucifer and his twin Michael, which culminated in Michael killing Chloe. Lucifer revived her by visiting Heaven, sacrificing himself, but was resurrected as the new God.

Ellis, German, and D.B. Woodside will all return for the final season, which promises a proper goodbye for each character. Ellis hinted at a potential return, saying the showrunners found 'somewhere we've never been before', leaving the door open for future appearances.
