Matriarch Tina Knowles has delighted fans with a deeply personal Instagram tribute to her eldest granddaughter, Blue Ivy Carter, who celebrated her 14th birthday this week. The 72-year-old shared a touching photo montage and a lengthy caption that revealed the unique origin story behind the teenager's distinctive name.
A Name Born from a Blueberry
In her post, which has already amassed over 100,000 likes, Knowles recounted the moment the family discovered Beyoncé was pregnant. She wrote that the name 'Blue Ivy' was inspired by the size of the baby when they first received the news. "We were told that you were the size of a blueberry and that is where your name came from!" she revealed to her 4.2 million followers.
Knowles, mother to Beyoncé, 44, and Solange, 39, described the collective family excitement and the daily prayers they shared for the unborn child until she was 12 weeks old, continuing individually until her arrival months later.
A Proud Grandmother's Tribute
The heartfelt note celebrated Blue Ivy's character and early talents. "It was apparent that you were a fighter from the beginning, and you talked very early. And you were always smart as a whip," Knowles recalled. She fondly remembered playing Princess and Barbie dolls, praising her granddaughter's incredible imagination.
She concluded her public message with immense pride, stating, "To say that I’m a proud grandmother is an understatement! Even with all of your accomplishments and success, you remain a very sweet, kind humble human being." She affectionately signed off by calling Blue her "manager, makeup artist, fashion adviser, my love."
Following in Iconic Footsteps
Blue Ivy, the daughter of rap mogul Jay-Z (Shawn Carter, 56) and global superstar Beyoncé, is already carving her own path in the entertainment world. The siblings, who married in 2008, are also parents to eight-year-old twins Rumi and Sir.
The teenager has notably appeared alongside her mother during Beyoncé's recent Renaissance and Cowboy Carter tours, showcasing her dance skills. She also performed in Netflix's Christmas Day NFL Halftime Show in 2024 and lent her voice to Princess Kiara in Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King the same year.
In a 2024 interview with GQ, Beyoncé confirmed her daughter's natural artistry, calling her "a fantastic editor, painter, and actress." She emphasised that Blue Ivy's stage appearances were entirely her own choice, stating, "I did not want Blue onstage. Blue wanted it for herself... she earned it."
The birthday wishes poured into the comments, including from singer and Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss, who simply wrote, "Happy birthday!!!"
