Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have responded to online critics who mocked their kissing style by posting a deliberately odd video of themselves locking lips. The pair, who confirmed their relationship earlier this year, were photographed kissing in a restaurant in July, prompting some fans to claim they “kissed like fish”.
In the light-hearted rebuttal, Mendes, 21, and Cabello, 22, sarcastically address the criticism. “So we, erm, we saw like on Twitter and stuff, you guys saying stuff about the way we're kissing, and how it looks weird,” Mendes says in the clip, with Cabello adding, “Yeah, it really hurt our feelings.” The video then shows them licking each other's chins and deliberately missing each other's mouths in slow motion.
Fans reacted with amusement, with one commenting, “Experts say they’re still ‘just friends’”, and another praising the “great form”. The video comes after speculation about their relationship intensified following the release of their collaboration Señorita and a steamy performance at the VMAs.
Cabello has previously stated she prefers to keep her relationship private in order to “protect” it. “Love is the most sacred, precious thing to me,” she told ELLE. “I want to always feel like my love is between me and that person, and never belonging to anyone else.”
