Susanna Reid has confirmed she will be taking a two-week break from Good Morning Britain (GMB) following the live coverage of Sir Keir Starmer's resignation as Prime Minister. The 55-year-old presenter returned to ITV's central London studio on Monday, June 22, to host an extended episode alongside Ed Balls.
Extended coverage for breaking news
During the programme, cameras were positioned outside Downing Street, with Reid hinting that major news could break while the show was on air. Later, Sir Keir Starmer appeared outside Number 10 to announce his resignation as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. He stated that he accepted he was not the best person to lead Labour into the next general election and had informed the King of his decision.
Starmer added that he has asked Labour's governing body to set out a timetable to replace him, with nominations opening on Thursday, July 9, and ending by the summer recess on Thursday, July 16.
Rolling news mode
Ahead of Starmer's speech, Reid confirmed that GMB would run until 10am, taking over Lorraine Kelly's usual slot. She said: "We are now in rolling news mode, we will be on air until 10am this morning because we've anticipated it all morning."
Following the announcement, Reid took to Instagram to confirm her break. She wrote: "BREAKING! At 9.30 this morning the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer RESIGNED as Prime Minister live @gmb. ANOTHER resignation at Number 10 in the last DECADE after Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak."
Special project and return date
Announcing her break, Reid added: "I'm on a special project and will be back @gmb on Monday 6th July, the week that nominations for a new leader open. See you then @itv." Fans expressed disappointment, with comments including "You will be missed Susanna" and "Oh it's never the same when you're not there!"
It is not yet known who will replace Reid, but potential stand-ins include Kate Garraway, Ranvir Singh, or Charlotte Hawkins. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am.
