Australian acting legend Stefan Dennis, best known for playing Paul Robinson in Neighbours, has bravely opened up about performing in the Strictly Come Dancing live tour while battling a debilitating bout of vertigo.
The 65-year-old actor, who was partnered with professional dancer Luba Mushtuk in the BBC competition, revealed the condition struck just hours before he was due to take to the stage at Leeds' First Direct Arena.
The Sudden Onset
"I woke up on the day of the show and the room was spinning," Dennis confessed. "I thought 'oh my god, what's happening?' I've never had vertigo before."
The timing couldn't have been worse for the seasoned performer, who faced the daunting prospect of executing complex dance routines in front of thousands of spectators while fighting overwhelming dizziness.
Professional Support System
Thankfully, Dennis found himself surrounded by a supportive network. The Strictly medical team immediately sprang into action, providing medication to manage his symptoms.
His dance partner Luba Mushtuk proved particularly understanding, having experienced vertigo herself in the past. "She was brilliant," Dennis praised. "She completely understood what I was going through."
The Show Must Go On
Displaying true professional grit, Dennis pushed through the discomfort to deliver his performances. "I was determined not to let anyone down," he stated emphatically.
The actor managed to complete both his afternoon and evening shows, though he admitted the experience was challenging. "It was tough, but the adrenaline and the support from everyone got me through."
Continuing the Journey
Despite the health scare, Dennis remains enthusiastic about his Strictly experience. He continues to perform in the nationwide tour, which features other celebrities including EastEnders star Bobby Brazier and Bad Education's Layton Williams.
