A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 struck off the coast of Japan's Miyagi region, north of Tokyo, prompting the Japanese government to issue emergency warnings to residents in five prefectures.

Earthquake Details

Japanese authorities rated the earthquake a five on their 1-7 intensity scale. Despite the strong tremor, officials confirmed there was no immediate risk of a tsunami. The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake's epicentre was 50 kilometres east of Ofunato in Miyagi, at a depth of approximately 43 kilometres.

Government Response

Emergency warnings were issued for five prefectures, urging residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks. No significant damage or casualties have been reported so far. The tremor serves as a reminder of Japan's vulnerability to seismic activity, given its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Last month, a separate earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, causing boats to leave port. However, in this instance, the threat of a tsunami has been ruled out by authorities.
