Prince Harry arrived in the UK on Monday evening for a five-day visit to mark the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. However, it remains unclear whether he will meet his father, King Charles, amid ongoing tensions and a busy royal schedule.
Trip Fraught with Obstacles
Before Harry even landed, his trip was embroiled in disputes over royal accommodation, security measures, and whether it was safe to bring his wife Meghan Markle and their children. The Duke of Sussex had initially planned to bring his family, but they stayed in California due to security risks.
Strained Father-Son Relationship
The relationship between Harry and Charles has been strained since Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and moved to the US. Tensions escalated after the couple’s interview with Oprah in 2021, their Netflix docuseries in 2022, and Harry’s memoir Spare in 2023. Despite these challenges, Harry has recently made moves to reconcile, especially after Charles was diagnosed with cancer in 2024.
Last Meeting in September 2025
Harry and Charles last met in September 2025 during Harry’s visit for the WellChild Awards. They had a 50-minute private tea at Clarence House, their first face-to-face meeting in 20 months. Royal watchers hoped for another reunion, but a meeting now seems unlikely.
King’s Busy Schedule
A royal source said the King has a very busy week and has “no plans” to alter his diary for a last-minute meeting. Another source described it as “immensely difficult” to arrange a meeting due to Harry’s last-minute changes. Charles has public engagements and private meetings every day.
One insider told the press: “This whole business has become incredibly tiresome and it remains unresolved less than 24 hours before the Duke is supposed to be arriving. The King takes his public work incredibly seriously and there will be no last minute deviations to his plans.”
Possible Weekend Meeting
It has been suggested that the Sussexes could meet the King at Highgrove or Sandringham on Saturday after the Invictus event, though no request has been made. However, a Palace aide claimed the King’s patience was “tested beyond endurance” after back-and-forth bickering over Harry’s accommodation offer. The source told The Sun: “The King’s patience snapped. He wants to be a loving father and grandfather but that was being tested beyond endurance. He is not willing to be pushed around, nor to indulge a constant state of chaos.”
