Scott Mills' Parting Words on Radio 2 Preceded Sudden BBC Dismissal
In a stunning turn of events, BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills was sacked by the corporation just hours after his final broadcast, where he assured listeners he would be back on air. The radio legend, who has been with the BBC for almost three decades, was relieved of all duties across the network due to matters related to personal conduct.
The Final Broadcast and Unexpected Departure
On March 24, Scott Mills, 53, presented what would become his last show, The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on Radio 2. During his closing remarks, he hinted at a possible departure, stating, "I'm getting everything mixed up today," and adding, "I should probably go, I'll try again tomorrow." He then handed over to Vernon Kay, running through the day's schedule before concluding with, "What a song to finish on."
In a light-hearted moment, Mills joked about being "oiled up and hairless" during a chat with Vernon Kay, as they discussed transforming into Meatloaf and Cher. He also explicitly told listeners, "I'm back tomorrow," a statement that would soon prove false.
Internal Communication and Public Statement
The Mirror understands that Mills was informed over the weekend that his contract with the BBC had been terminated. Director of Music, Lorna Clarke, sent a blistering email to his colleagues, informing them he would not be returning to work. In the email, she said, "I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected, and therefore must come as a shock."
Clarke acknowledged Mills' long tenure across various BBC programmes, including Radio 1, 5Live, Radio 2, and TV, and noted the impact on the audience. She added, "I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything further now."
The BBC issued a brief public statement, confirming, "While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC."
Listener Reactions and Show Replacement
Following Mills' final broadcast, listeners expressed confusion and surprise on social media. One said, "What's happened to BBC Radio 2's Scott Mills? He wasn’t due to be away, and even said 'See you tomorrow' to Vernon yesterday. Now he's away until at least Easter Monday..." Another commented, "Gary's been doing a stellar job sitting in for Scott Mills on the breakfast show this week #SoundsOfThe80s." A third noted, "Geez - both Scott Mills and Ken off on the same day without a heads-up. Is there a sale on somewhere? #popmaster."
Since Mills' departure, Gary Davies has hosted the Breakfast Show on a daily basis, joined by comedian and former Waterloo Road star, Jason Manford. Mills first joined the BBC at Radio 1, presenting the early breakfast show between 4am and 7am, before moving to Radio 2.
The sudden axing marks the end of an era for the popular presenter, whose casual farewell now carries a poignant weight in light of the subsequent events.
