Sam Ryder, the Eurovision favourite who shot to fame with his 2022 hit Space Man, made a striking West End debut on Tuesday night, appearing drenched in fake blood as Jesus in the press night performance of Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium. The 37-year-old singer, known for his colourful stage presence, was almost unrecognisable as he took on the iconic role in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock musical.
Shirtless and Crowned with Thorns
One powerful image captured Ryder shirtless and covered in fake blood, wearing the Crown of Thorns during the emotional crucifixion sequence. The concert-style revival features a 19-piece live orchestra and around 30 performers, leaning into the show's rock roots rather than a traditional theatrical staging. Ryder expressed his excitement, saying: "I'm thrilled to be part of this. I'm a massive fan of the score—every single metalhead, rock fan, and prog fan knows and loves this score. Andrew Lloyd Webber is the original metalhead!"
Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Flamboyant King Herod
Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 50, also shocked audiences with his transformation into King Herod, a role he described as "very flamboyant, kind of like a recluse of a rock star who's been holed away—like Madonna has been holed away in her palace, golden palace, and she's come out to see this God-like creature who's decided he's also this son of God." Ferguson added: "There's a moment of like, 'We're both Godly creatures—show me what you can do and I'll show you what I can do.'" He noted that the "costumes are ridiculous," reflecting the character's over-the-top nature.
Backstage Celebrations with Andrew Lloyd Webber
Photographs captured Ryder beaming backstage after the performance alongside theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as proudly posing with the vinyl release of his Jesus Christ Superstar recordings. The Space Man singer also celebrated with Ferguson after the curtain call, both appearing delighted with the launch. The cast includes Olivier Award nominee Tyrone Huntley as Judas Iscariot, Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene, and David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate. Timothy Sheader directs the production, with choreography by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie and design by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Tom Scutt.
West End Run Until September 2026
The production continues at the London Palladium until September 5, 2026, offering audiences a chance to see Ryder's transformative performance. The musical tells the story of Christ's final days through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, with a score that has captivated rock and metal fans for decades.
