Former Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas has made a startling confession about the early days of his relationship with his now-fiancée, TV personality Lucy Mecklenburgh. The 41-year-old star revealed he was secretly planning to break up with her on their very first date.

During the Christmas special of his family podcast, At Home With The Thomas Bros, Ryan opened up about his initial doubts. He admitted to his brothers, Scott and Adam, both 37, that after meeting Lucy on the reality show Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls in 2017, he had cold feet.
"I just found it a bit unattractive that someone actually liked me," Ryan confessed, explaining his mindset at the time. He revealed he was going to self-sabotage by calling it quits when they met in Manchester after filming ended. The couple had spent a month together on the island, but Ryan was prepared to end their romance before it properly began.
A Dramatic Change of Heart
However, the moment Ryan saw Lucy, his plans completely unravelled. "She looked incredible," he recalled. "And she was like super cool." The pair shared a kiss in his brother Adam's car, a moment Ryan cites as the point he decided he was "in it for the long haul."
The playful podcast exchange saw Lucy, 34, confirm the story, adding: "He later on told me he was meeting me... to say 'No, no I'm not interested'." The couple, who got engaged in 2019, clearly found humour in the near-miss that could have altered their future.
Previous Date Night Drama Revealed
This isn't the first time Ryan has shared behind-the-scenes relationship drama on the podcast. In a previous episode, he recounted a disastrous planned date night that went spectacularly wrong.
He described booking a restaurant and a hotel in Manchester, building up anticipation for a romantic evening. However, the mood quickly soured. "Every time a conversation come up, it was a debate," Ryan explained, noting the energy was "all off."
The situation escalated when Lucy abruptly left the table. Ryan, thinking she had gone to the toilet, waited for half an hour before realising she wasn't returning. His texts and calls went unanswered, leaving him alone in the restaurant. His brother Adam had previously warned him that overly planned date nights rarely work out as expected.
Despite these rocky moments, the couple's relationship has endured. Their story, from a potential breakup on a first date to a lasting engagement, continues to captivate fans who followed their initial meeting on reality TV.
