Ryan Thomas and Lucy Mecklenburgh Delay Wedding Amid Financial Considerations
Ryan Thomas and Lucy Mecklenburgh have reportedly postponed their wedding plans, having been engaged for over seven years. The couple, who fell in love in 2017 after meeting on Channel 4's Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls, got engaged in Positano, Italy, but have yet to tie the knot. While they previously cited life getting in the way, sources now suggest financial factors are playing a significant role in the delay.
Financial Literacy and Family Influence
A source told The Sun that Lucy Mecklenburgh, a former TOWIE star, comes from a wealthy background, with her father Paul having an extensive property portfolio. Lucy and her two sisters are expected to inherit substantial assets. The source explained, "Lucy listens to everything her father says, and she has always been very financially literate. She was raised to understand money and be very careful with it." After earning money from TOWIE, her father taught her to make careful investments.
In contrast, Ryan Thomas has admitted to past financial mistakes and a lack of financial savvy. The source noted that while the couple currently share some money and own properties together, "they wouldn't be surprised if Lucy has been advised to protect her interests." However, Lucy is said to be proud of Ryan for overcoming previous financial difficulties.
Ryan Thomas's Financial Struggles
Ryan Thomas, a former Coronation Street actor, faced significant financial challenges recently. His business account, R James Thomas Ltd., which holds funds from TV and social media work, ended January 2025 with just £1 in cash. This followed the cancellation of his prime-time ITV show 99 To Beat. Financial statements filed with Companies House for the year ending 26 January 2025 showed "cash at bank and in hand" at £1, compared to £41,361 the previous year.
Ryan has also been bankrupt in the past. In 2024, at age 40, he reflected on his money management as a teenager, telling The Times, "I had money from a very young age - and for a 16-year-old I had a hell of a lot of money. So, I did have a credit card growing up and it caused me a few problems." He admitted to neglecting finances, leading to late repayments and an unknown debt. Ryan filed for bankruptcy in 2013 due to an unpaid tax bill, which he attributes to negligence.
Despite these setbacks, Ryan does not regret his past mistakes. He said, "I don't regret any of the things that happened to me because I actually feel like they've been a real blessing. I've learnt so much." His career includes winning Celebrity Big Brother in 2018, appearing on Celebrity MasterChef and Celebrity Antiques Road Trip in 2022, and winning Dancing on Ice in 2024.
Family Life and Future Plans
Since getting engaged, Ryan and Lucy have welcomed two children: Roman, six, and Lilah, three. Ryan also has a daughter, Scarlett, from his previous relationship with Tina O'Brien. The couple's focus on family and financial stability may be contributing to the wedding delay, with no immediate plans for their big day.
This situation highlights the complexities of celebrity relationships, where personal finances and family backgrounds can influence major life decisions. As Ryan and Lucy navigate these challenges, their story serves as a reminder of the importance of financial planning in modern partnerships.
