Australian actor Ruby Rose cut a sombre figure this Wednesday while checking her mail barefoot at her Los Angeles home. The 39-year-old, dressed in a black tank top that showed off her tattoos and baggy grey jeans, looked downcast just days after revealing she had received a vicious death threat on Instagram.
Online Abuse and a Defiant Response
The Batwoman star took to social media on Friday to share a screenshot of a direct message from a stranger that read: 'Just kill yourself you stupid c***.' Demonstrating resilience, Rose captioned the vile message with a withering retort: 'Lol and men wonder why they are lonely.'
This disturbing online harassment arrived in the wake of Rose's very public criticism of American actress Sydney Sweeney. The feud centres on the new biopic 'Christy,' which details the life of legendary boxer and domestic abuse survivor Christy Martin.
The Christy Martin Biopic Controversy
Ruby Rose launched a blistering takedown of Sweeney on Threads this past Monday. She claimed she was originally attached to play the lead role, referred to as 'Cherry' in her post, and that the initial production team was nearly entirely queer.
Rose did not hold back in her criticism of Sweeney, who is a registered Republican, alleging the Euphoria star 'hates gay people' and was responsible for the film's disastrous box office performance, which reportedly had one of the lowest-ever domestic openings for a wide release.
'The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,' Rose wrote. 'For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the "people". None of "the people" want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You're a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.'
Fallout and Political Dimensions
Despite Rose's scathing allegations, the real Christy Martin has publicly supported Sydney Sweeney, appearing alongside her during the film's promotional tour. The boxer, who had 49 wins in the 1990s, survived an attempted murder by her husband and later married her former rival, Lisa Holewyne, becoming an advocate for domestic violence survivors.
Sweeney has increasingly become a target for left-leaning figures in Hollywood since it was revealed she is a registered Republican. Controversy first flared in 2022 when her mother's birthday party featured 'Make Sixty Great Again' hats and 'Blue Lives Matter' attire.
At the time, Sweeney tweeted that the celebration had been misconstrued as a political statement, pleading, 'Please stop making assumptions.' She later told GQ UK that she felt nothing she could say would correct the public narrative.
As for Ruby Rose, she was seen navigating her front lawn, accessorising her casual outfit with a gold watch and ring, a visual contrast to the storm of online controversy and personal attacks she is currently facing.
