Rick Astley has revealed that he has become emotional at live concerts in recent years, even shedding tears during a performance by Liam Gallagher at the Oasis reunion in Manchester. The 60-year-old pop legend, who performed at the Isle of Wight festival over the weekend, admitted that live music now moves him to tears.
Emotional Reactions at Concerts
Astley shared his experience of attending a Bruce Springsteen concert in Milan last year. 'Second song in – I cry a lot more these days – and I wasn’t even p*****, but tears were streaming down my face. It really affected me,' he said. He had a similar reaction at the Oasis reunion show, where Liam Gallagher's performance left him in awe. 'Liam’s voice was fantastic, he nailed it. He’d punch my lights out for saying this, but I wondered if he could still do it, 25 years on. It’s a tall order. He did. He nailed us to the seats.'
Advice from Dave Grohl
Astley also shared advice from Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl for aspiring musicians. 'I don’t mean to name drop, but Dave Grohl (uncle Dave as everyone calls him) always gets asked for advice for younger musicians. I remember him saying just go and play. Play everywhere, all the time. If someone sees you, there’s a big chance they’ll come again.'
During his Isle of Wight set, Astley impressed the crowd with his guitar and drum skills, even performing a cover of Raye's 'Where’s My Husband' and announcing mid-song, 'Your husband is here!'
