Former MTV reality television personality Lateysha Grace has ignited a fierce online debate after disclosing that she recently took her one-year-old daughter to have her ears pierced. The star, who first found fame on the show The Valleys and later appeared on Big Brother, revealed in a TikTok video that she had waited until her daughter Navy turned one, but stated she would normally have had the procedure done at just six months old.
Reality Star's Personal Milestone Sparks Controversy
In a detailed video shared with her 290,000 followers, Lateysha Grace explained her decision to proceed with the ear piercing for her daughter Navy. She admitted to feeling nervous about the choice, but emphasised that she had found a trained professional via Instagram who specialises in infant ear piercings and conducts home visits.
"Don't judge me, okay," Lateysha said directly to the camera while holding her daughter. "I'm about to get Navy's ears pierced. She's one year old, and normally I get the girls done at six months, but life has been life-ing, and I just have not had the time or the mental energy to deal with it."
Mixed Reactions Flood Social Media Platforms
The video, which has garnered over 1,600 likes, shows the consent process and the moment after the piercing, where Navy appears tearful while being comforted. Lateysha captioned the upload, describing it as a "special little milestone" and praising the professional for making the experience "calm, gentle and stress-free."
However, the comment section quickly became a battleground of opposing views. Critics were swift to condemn the action, with one user questioning, "Why put her through that pain?" to which Lateysha retorted, "For two seconds?" Another comment argued, "You still chose to put her through pain for those 2 seconds, it's not like a vaccine the earring doesn't benefit her, only you." Further criticism included statements like, "I do not get this at all. It's about you, not the baby."
Supporters Rally in Defence of Parental Choice
Amid the backlash, numerous supporters came to Lateysha's defence, sharing their own experiences and affirming parental autonomy. One supporter wrote, "I had my ears done as 6 weeks old, forever thankful I had it done so young." Another commented, "I had my little girls done at 8months and they came to the house and it was so much better, she didn't even cry." A third supporter succinctly stated, "It's the mums choice end of."
This incident highlights the ongoing and deeply polarised debate surrounding parenting choices, cosmetic procedures for infants, and the scrutiny faced by celebrities on social media platforms. The discussion continues to unfold online, with strong opinions on both sides of the argument.
