Prince George is set to start at Eton College in September, following in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, and his uncle, Prince Harry. The young royal, who will celebrate his 13th birthday next month, currently attends Lambrook School alongside his siblings. Lambrook only educates children up to the age of 13, making a move necessary.
The Announcement
On June 16, a statement confirmed that the Prince and Princess of Wales have officially chosen Eton College for George's next school. While speculation had long pointed to Eton, other schools like Marlborough College, Princess Catherine's alma mater, were also considered. Eton's proximity to the family's home, Forest Lodge, just six miles away, is believed to have influenced William and Catherine's decision.
Harry's Mixed Memories
Prince Harry attended Eton from 1998 to 2003, a period he described as tough in his memoir, Spare. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Express that the news will likely bring back mixed memories for Harry. He wrote about his brother pulling rank and not wanting to speak to him at school, and the Eton uniform reminded him of funeral dress after their mother's death. Despite not being a scholar, Harry enjoyed sports and credits the school's cadet program for preparing him for his army career.
Fitzwilliams added: "He is fond of the children, although the family rift has not enabled him to know his nephews and nieces. I am sure he will wish George well and may have some regrets if his own thinking back. It was a tough time for him."
Harry's Account in Spare
In his memoir, Harry wrote about his relationship with William at Eton. He recalled William telling him to pretend they didn't know each other. "Willy told me to pretend I didn't know him," Harry wrote. William added, "You don't know me, Harold, and I don't know you."
Prince George's enrollment at Eton marks a new chapter for the young royal, as he prepares to follow the family tradition at one of the UK's most prestigious schools.
