Piers Morgan's drastic U-turn in his World Cup tweets has been hailed as the perfect summary of England's crushing semi-final defeat against Argentina. The outspoken presenter, 61, live-tweeted the entire match as the nation watched nervously.
Throughout the game, Morgan was emphatic in his support for England, sharing messages such as 'come on boys' and praising Spence as the 'most improved player of this World Cup'. After England's first goal, he jubilantly tweeted: 'This has been a Tuchel tactical masterclass. Take us home, Thomas!'
From jubilation to despair
However, just twenty minutes later, as Argentina equalised, Morgan posted simply 'FFS'. His rapid shift from elation to frustration mirrored the nation's mood as England's fortunes changed dramatically during the 90 minutes.
Fans quickly noted that Morgan's commentary perfectly encapsulated the rollercoaster of emotions. One commenter on his posts said: 'Best summary of the ENG-ARG game,' sharing an image of Morgan's tweets posted in quick succession. Another joked: 'The duality of man'.
Defending Tuchel after defeat
Earlier on the day after the match, Morgan returned to X, formerly known as Twitter, to blast the criticism directed at manager Thomas Tuchel. Many fans had blamed the German head coach for being too defensive and 'parking the bus' when England took the lead, instead of pushing for more goals.
'Yes, England were too defensive. But the abuse pouring down on Thomas Tuchel's head today is ridiculous,' Morgan insisted. 'He was 5 minutes away from leading us into our first World Cup Final in 60 years. And if we'd hung on, he'd be lauded a hero today by the same people trashing him.'
Morgan then heaped praise on England's players, saying they 'barely put a foot wrong' and gave fans 'some fantastic moments, especially the 10-man heroics in Mexico'. He added: 'Let's not forget that amid all the bitter acrimony of losing a game we should have won. The next big tournament is the Euros on UK soil. I back Tuchel to bring it home then.'
Controversy over Argentina's banner
Morgan also took aim at Argentina's players, who held up a controversial political banner during their victory celebrations. The sign read 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas', which translates to 'The Falklands are Argentine'.
'Classless pr*cks,' Morgan wrote. 'I hope Spain beat them as badly in the Final as we beat them in the Falklands War.'
Argentina now risks disciplinary action from FIFA, whose code of conduct bans 'banners, flags, flyers, apparel and other paraphernalia that are of a political, offensive, and/or discriminatory nature' inside stadiums. In 2014, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 after a friendly against Slovenia for a similar banner.
Feud reignited
These tweets come after Morgan reignited his feud with Alex Beresford, five years after dramatically leaving Good Morning Britain following a disagreement about Meghan Markle. In an episode of his YouTube show, Piers Morgan Uncensored, he took a swipe at Beresford, saying: 'I see all my old – well, nearly all my old – Good Morning Britain colleagues. I don't see the weather guy very often. I would cross continents to avoid him.'
Their public argument began when Morgan claimed the Duchess of Sussex had lied about Buckingham Palace allegedly rejecting her pleas for help with suicidal thoughts. Beresford challenged him, leading to a heated on-air exchange. Morgan later quit the programme after refusing to apologise for his comments, which attracted 41,000 complaints to broadcasting watchdog Ofcom.
